This remix honestly started as a bit of an accident. I loved the original and considered it as close to perfect as a track can get. I was messing around with the vocal in Logic, trying to understand the different layers of the project, threw a tape delay on the vocal for fun, and suddenly stumbled into a tone and texture that grabbed me. The whole thing kind of spiralled into a proper idea after that, and it came together quicker than I expected.

Vibe-wise, I wanted something gritty and dirty, something that pushed that beautiful pop-punk vocal and warm, heavy guitars into a heavier, bass-driven dance world. I ultimately wanted to make a track that makes you nod your head, screw your face, and go “oooooh” when it hits in a club.

Production Process

Stem splitting
Started by breaking the original into its components and playing with the vocal. The entire remix was born out of a happy accident with tape delay.

Bass design
Used one of my favourite bass patches that’s shown up in a few unreleased projects. It became the backbone of the remix and gave it the weight it needed.

Percussion & energy shaping
The hi-hats are aggressively squeezed with OTT to give them that tight, pressurised feeling, like they’re on the edge of bursting.
The biggest challenge was the verses. I initially tried a more classic house beat (hi-hat + clap), but it clashed with the reese bass. Switching to an acoustic cymbal pattern grounded the track and made the genre-blend feel right.

Keeping the soul of the original
The raw pop-punk vibe of the chorus was perfect as-is, so I kept it untouched. The hard part was reshaping the verses so the remix felt new, without losing the heart of what made the original work.

Influences

There weren’t any explicit influences going into this one. You could draw parallels with tracks like Agen Wida, Chicken Soup, by Skrillex (and that new unreleased one with Habstrakt that he played in his Ultra set). A bit of that energy crept in. There’s also a small nod to UK bassline in the drum choices.

This is an unofficial remix. The band doesn’t allow remixes on Spotify, so for now it lives on SoundCloud and YouTube. They’re dropping their new EP Play this Friday, and I actually saw them live in Glasgow on Sunday. Incredible show.

If this is your first time hearing my stuff, welcome. This track is a little grittier, a little heavier, and a side of my sound I want to keep exploring.
